We always here about the value and benefits of being grateful. How showing our gratitude for the people and things in our lives can help us to grow. How being grateful for all that we have and showing it in our thoughts, words and actions can have an amazing impact on our lives. Heck, if someone asked us right now “are you grateful for everything in your life” almost every one of us would say “yes, of course I am” and at a certain level of awareness we would be telling the truth. But how many of us have really taken the time to focus our thoughts on how grateful we really are and how thankful we should be for all the gifts and blessing in our lives? Ho often do we really spent some time in quiet thought reflecting on all the good in our lives and the world around us.
It’s not as easy as we may think. Sure we can say it easily and we can say that we appreciate the people and good things in our lives but do we really recognize ALL the things we should be grateful for? Do we say ” I do appreciate that person” and then add a “but if they would just….” to the end of the sentence. Do we say we are thankful for all the blessings in each day and then add “but I just wish it was…….”. How can we truly be grateful for everyone and everything that comes into our lives if each time we minimize the gift that it is.
I thought about this one day a while back and realized how much I take for granted in my life. I realized that there is so much to be thankful for that I was just not paying attention to. So I decided that for one hour I would look at everything and everyone that a saw and find a reason to be thankful and grateful. I decided that I would not ignore anyone or anything. If it came into my mind I had to find a reason to be thankful, I had to show gratitude. It seemed a little silly but I wanted to see how appreciating even the small things in our lives could impact how I saw the world.
So as I started my car I appreciated the gas that gave my engine the fuel to start. I appreciated the seatbelt that protects us, the street signs that guide us and the people who took the time to develop, create and build all of it. I appreciated the sun as it came up on my drive into work and the warmth that it provided. I appreciated the radio for the music and the singers and musicians that created such beautiful sounds. I appreciated the car behind me who got right on my bumper and flashed their lights for showing me patience and kindness as I allowed them to pass. I appreciated the road that I was driving on and realized how much work it must have taken for others to pave the way for me to get to work. I appreciated the trees that lined the road and how important they were to our environment and all the animals that lived in them. How beautiful they looked as the sun shined through their branches. I looked at everything that came into my eyes sight and everything that came into mind. I looked at everyone around me and every person I thought of and I found a reason to be grateful. No one and no thing was ignored or discarded as not being worthy of gratitude. It all mattered for that hour and I was amazed that with just a little focus and awareness how I could find a reason to be grateful for just about everything in my life, everyone in my life and everything that was happening in my life and as I did I found myself happier, more peaceful and more joyful about my life and everything in it.
So if you get a chance take one hour and really look at everything and I do mean everything and find a reason to be grateful for it. Take one hour and look at your life and realize that your happiness doesn’t come from the people or the things in it but from your own thoughts about them. How a simple conscious choice to see the world differently and appreciate all that you are and all that you are a part of can have an amazing impact on who you are for the rest of your life. Then when you find yourself feeling lost, lonely, angry or frustrated take another hour and do it again.
